Workshop for boys

Changing Culture

Examining the influence of banter on young male relationships, the importance of individuality, and creating a more inclusive culture.

Australia has long celebrated mateship as a foundation of our culture, built on trust, loyalty, and shared experiences. However, true mateship isn’t about putting others down with condescending judgement or isolating those who are different.

Alienation and conformity have no place in authentic camaraderie—real mateship encourages individuality, celebrates each person’s uniqueness, and creates space for vulnerability.

Pluralistic ignorance is often the reason that young males perceive banter as being without consequence, failing to recognize when it hurts and isolates others. The pressure to conform to these group behaviours can perpetuate harmful patterns, deterring young men from authenticity and individuality.

Changing Culture Workshop

Workshop Two

This workshop is designed to inform young males of the reality of their behaviour, its consequences, and the problematic nature of normative social influence surrounding ‘banter’.

Participants analyze how embracing individuality over conformity not only strengthens friendships but also supports mental well-being for individuals and the community. Providing a space where boys have the confidence to express their authentic self without being judged or shamed, can transform understandings of self-expression amidst friends.

This experience aims to disrupt damaging behaviour patterns and transform how young males view banter’s place in their friendships; a tool for reinforcing inclusivity, not tearing each other down. Expanding on this concept, the power of compliments is utilized to create a more supportive and inclusive environment among the cohort.
